Why was ash used for washing utensils in the past? भांडी घासण्यासाठी पूर्वी राख का वापरली जाई ?

                Ash used to be used for washing utensils. Even today, ashes are widely used for washing utensils, especially in rural areas! Now why use ash? Some of the impurities in the ashes are used to wash the ashes. The ash produced by burning gourds and wood and coal contains impurities with silica and alkali properties. Impurities with alkaline properties include carbonates. These carbonates keep the utensils clean. Silica impurities remove oiliness and dirt from the pot. Rubbing the ash on the pot causes the action of carbonates and silica on the pot. This removes the stickiness from the pots, removes dirt from them and keeps the pots clean.

                भांडी घासण्यासाठी राख वापरली जाण्याचं प्रमाण पूर्वी जास्त होतं. आजही भांडी घासण्यासाठी मोठ्या प्रमाणावर, विशेषतः ग्रामीण भागात, राखेचाच वापर करण्यात येतो! आता राख वापरण्याचे कारण काय? तर राखेत असलेल्या काही अशुद्धींमूळे राख भांडी घासण्यासाठी वापरली जाते. गोवऱ्या व लाकूड आणि कोळसा जाळून तयार झालेल्या राखेत सिलीका आणि अल्कलीचा गुणधर्म असलेल्या अशुद्धी असतात. अल्कलीचा गुणधर्म असलेल्या अशुद्धीमध्ये कार्बोनेटस् असतात. या कार्बोनेट्समुळे भांडी स्वच्छ निघतात. सिलिका या अशद्धीमुळे भांड्यावरचा तेलकटपणा व घाण निघते. राख भांड्यावर चोळल्याने कार्बोनेट्सची व सिलिकाची क्रिया भांड्यावर होते. त्यामुळे भांड्यांवरचा चिकटपणा नाहीसा होतो, त्यांच्यावरची घाण सुटी होते व भांडी स्वच्छ होतात.
